The 30-second answer

Most people don't need a unit. They need their stuff out of the way.

Choose Smartbox if…

You'd rather not touch a truck

We drop a weatherproof storage unit at your door, you fill it on your own schedule, and we collect it and store it in our secure facility. You pack once, or have our team load it for you.

Choose traditional self-storage if…

You need to get to your things often

A drive-up unit at a facility like Storage King makes sense when you’ll be dropping in week to week, or storing a car or business stock you handle constantly.

At a glance

Smartbox vs Storage King, line by line

Both keep your things in a secure facility. The difference is everything around that: who does the lifting, who does the driving, and what you pay.

The honest breakdown

The real difference isn't the unit. It's the trips.

Storage King is the biggest self-storage network in the country, and for good reason: if you want to drive up to a unit at 9pm on a Sunday and grab a box, a fixed facility is hard to beat. The catch is the part nobody puts on the price list: getting your things to that unit, and back out again later.

With traditional self-storage you load your goods at home, drive them across town (often hiring a van to do it), unload into the unit, and then repeat the whole thing in reverse when you move out. That’s two moving days hiding inside one storage rental. Smartbox collapses that into one. We drop a weatherproof Smartbox at your place, you load it on your own time, and we collect it and keep it in our secure facility. You can read the full process on our how it works page, but the short version is: you pack once and we handle the driving.

We bring the Smartbox to your door and collect it when you’re done. The quote you get is the price you pay.

What about price?

For the same volume, Smartbox is usually the more cost-effective choice, and often cheaper on the monthly rate alone. One real example: a Smartbox Uber Box is $279 a month, even on a short stay, where an equivalent unit at a comparable fixed facility in Sydney was recently quoting around $420. Fixed-facility pricing does move around, though. New sites often open with sharp rates to fill up, then push increases through, and in some markets, Melbourne for one, the unit rates sit closer. What doesn’t change is the rest of the self-storage bill, the part nobody quotes up front: the van hire, the fuel, and your own time moving everything twice. We break the numbers down in our self-storage cost guide for 2026 and answer the blunt version in mobile storage vs self-storage: which is cheaper. If you’d rather just see your own number, the space calculator gives you an instant estimate.

How often will you really need it?

This is the question that settles it. Storage tends to fall into two camps. Either you’re putting things away and getting on with your life (a renovation, a sale, a move, a decluttered garage), or you’re dipping in constantly. Smartbox is built for the first camp, but you can still reach your things. With 48 hours’ notice we bring your module into our ground-floor, undercover access bay during business hours (8am to 5pm weekdays, 9am to noon Saturday), and you drive your car right up to it. For heavy furniture that beats wrestling a trolley into a lift at a multi-storey facility. What we don’t offer is round-the-clock, turn-up-whenever access, so if you’ll be in and out after hours or several times a week, a drive-up unit near you is the better tool, and we’ll happily tell you so.

If you’d rather not lift anything, we also run a loading service: we deliver, our team loads the module, and we take it away to store, usually inside a couple of hours. About one in seven customers use it, and it’s popular where parking is tight or the clock is against you. We also store vehicles at our Sydney warehouse, which suits a car you don’t need to reach every few days.

Most of our customers come to us mid-move. They’re already juggling a removalist, a settlement date and a hundred boxes, and the last thing they want is a separate trip to a storage facility. We deliver across Sydney and Melbourne, down to suburb level, from Balmain and Dee Why to Richmond and Burwood, so the unit comes to the kerb, not the other way around. Thousands of those moves are why our reviews sit at 4.8 stars.

Smartbox vs Storage King FAQ

Usually, yes. Smartbox is the more cost-effective option overall, and often cheaper on the rate too. For example, a Smartbox Uber Box is $279 a month where an equivalent Sydney self-storage unit was recently quoting around $420. Fixed-facility prices vary by branch and rise over time, so it’s worth comparing your own quote. You also avoid the costs self-storage doesn’t quote: van or truck hire, fuel, and the time to move everything twice. Our cost guide walks through the full numbers.

Self-storage is a unit at a facility that you drive your belongings to and access yourself. Mobile storage, like Smartbox, comes to you: we deliver the unit, you pack it at home, and we collect and store it. Both end up in a secure facility; the difference is who does the transporting. See how it works.

Yes. With 48 hours’ notice we bring your module into our ground-floor, undercover access bay during business hours (8am to 5pm weekdays, 9am to noon Saturday), and you can drive right up to it, which makes adding or grabbing heavy items easy. We can also redeliver the whole Smartbox to you. If you need to drop in after hours or several times a week, a fixed facility with 24/7 access may suit you better.

No. We deliver the unit to your door and collect it again at no cost, even on short-term hires. There’s no van to hire, no driving across town, and no double-handling, which are the main extra costs that come with a traditional self-storage unit.

Yes. As well as the standard service where you pack at your own pace, we offer a paid loading service: we deliver, our team loads the module, and we take it away to store, usually within a couple of hours. It’s handy when parking is limited or you’re short on time.

Yes, at our Sydney warehouse. It suits vehicles you don’t need to access regularly. If you want to take a car out every few days or after hours, a fixed facility is the better fit.
