Both bring a storage box to your door, you pack it, and they collect and store it. TaxiBox is a large national operator. Smartbox is a Sydney and Melbourne specialist. Here’s how the two line up, and who each one suits.
We drop a weatherproof storage unit at your door, you fill it on your own schedule, and we collect it and store it in our secure facility. You pack once, or have our team load it for you.
They also cover Brisbane, the Gold Coast, Adelaide, Perth and Geelong, so if you’re in one of those cities, they can help where we can’t yet.
Both keep your things in a secure facility. The difference is everything around that: who does the lifting, who does the driving, and what you pay.

When both options are delivered, packed at home and stored for you, the model isn’t the deciding factor. The details are. Smartbox is a local Sydney and Melbourne service, so you deal with a team that works your city, and we place your module in a ground-floor, undercover drive-up access bay when you need to reach it. For adding or grabbing heavy furniture, driving up to the unit beats a trolley and a lift.
If you’d rather not lift at all, we can load the unit for you, and our terms suit short or open-ended stays rather than a fixed 12-month rate. TaxiBox covers more cities, so if you’re outside Sydney or Melbourne they’re worth a look. Inside our areas, the local service and the access bay are where we earn our keep.
We bring the Smartbox to your door and collect it when you’re done. The quote you get is the price you pay.
TaxiBox publishes a starting rate and we quote you. That is the first real difference, and it matters more than it looks. Their rates page says mobile storage starts from $169 a month. Their Sydney pages say $199. Both numbers are theirs, and the gap is the point: “from” moves with how many boxes you take and how long you keep them. We do the same thing, we just do it in the quote instead of in the headline.
The number that actually settles it is the one per-box pricing hides. A TAXIBOX is 8m³, and that $169 is per box, per month. Our Uber Box is $279 a month and it is 20m³. To match one Uber Box you need two and a half of theirs, plus a second and third delivery, and a second and third collection. Below about a room and a half the comparison is close and worth running both ways. Above it, the maths turns fast, and it turns further the denser your load is: they cap at 1 tonne a box, our Classic takes 1,400kg and our Uber takes 2,000kg.
There are places where TaxiBox is simply the better offer and we would rather you heard it here than found it later. They lock your price for 12 months from the day your storage starts. They give 15% off long-term storage, they give the 13th month free if you store a year, and they take $20 off each box when you book two or more. We do not have equivalents to those. If you know your dates, know your volume and want the rate frozen, that is a real advantage and it is theirs.
What neither starting rate covers is the rest of the bill. TaxiBox charges from $99 for delivery and from $99 again for redelivery, waived on some bookings and free locally once you pass four months. We break the wider numbers down in our self-storage cost guide for 2026 and answer the blunt version in mobile storage vs self-storage: which is cheaper. If you would rather just see your own number, the space calculator gives you an instant estimate.

This comparison is the hub. These guides answer the questions that come up right before you book — cost, sizing, and how the other brands stack up.
Real monthly price ranges by size, what drives the cost up, and where the hidden fees hide.
Both are mobile storage: a unit is delivered to your door, you pack it, and it’s collected and stored. Smartbox is a Sydney and Melbourne specialist with a drive-up access bay, an optional loading service, and flexible terms. TaxiBox covers more capital cities.
