Creating a necessities box before you move

Congratulations! You’ve taken the giant leap and have decided to relocate to a more spacious and comfortable abode. You’re now ready to start packing your valuables to ensure that they arrive safely at your new place. We’ve already shared some packing tips for your bedroom, kitchen and home-office goods, this week we’re looking at creating a necessities box to house all your essential items to help make moving a bit easier.

Why you need an essentials box?

If you’ve moved before, you know how chaotic the first night and week can be especially if you don’t know which box has what. This is where your necessities or essential box comes in. Your essential box will consist of all the items you need and will be the first carton you open at your new home. Usually, a necessities box is the last cartib you pack before you leave your old place, but its good idea to identify what you need for the first few hours or days while you’re going through your current kitchen, bedroom and bathroom.

So, what exactly should you include your necessities box?

We’ve split it into two categories: Personal items and First week essentials

Personal Items

  • Clothes to last a couple nights (underwear, shirt, pants etc.)
  • Toothbrush
  • Toiletries (shampoo, toothpaste, hand soap and skin products etc.)
  • Phone
  • Other electronic items such as laptop or iPad
  • Glasses
  • Charger

First Week Essentials

  • Toilet paper
  • Important documents such as medical records, passport and financial information’s
  • Emergency kit
  • All-purpose cleaner and wipes
  • Snacks and drinks
  • Easy food item for dinner/lunch such as jar of pasta sauce and pasta
  • Scissors and knife
  • Towels, dishtowel and dishcloths
  • Dish soap and sponge
  • Mug, plates, glasses and cutlery for each family member
  • Flashlight/candle/matches
  • Shower curtain
  • Garbage bag
  • Tool kit

Although, it may still be early days before you can start packing your necessities, it doesn’t hurt to start planning and listing all the items you’ll need to survive the first few days of the move. Just remember to limit the items you need and pack the essential goods you need for the first 24 hours.
